Curry's Formalism as Structuralism
نویسنده
چکیده
In 1939, Curry proposed a philosophy of mathematics he called formalism. He made this proposal in two works originally written in 1939. These are the two philosophical works for which Curry is known, and they have left a false impression of his views. In this article, I propose to clarify Curry’s views by referring to some of his later writings on the subject. I claim that Curry’s philosophy was not what is now usually called formalism, but is really a form of structuralism. 1 Curry’s early philosophy of mathematics In his [1939], which is a shortened form of the original manuscript of his [1951], Curry proposed a philosophy of mathematics he called formalism. These two works, which represent Curry’s views in 1939, early in his career, are often the only works by which Curry’s philosophical ideas are known; see, for example, [Shapiro, 2000, Chapter 6, §5], where [Curry, 1951] is mistakenly identified as a mature work. ∗This work was supported in part by a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Spacetime Structuralism
In this essay, I consider the ontological status of spacetime from the points of view of the standard tensor formalism and three alternatives: twistor theory, Einstein algebras, and geometric algebra. I briefly review how classical field theories can be formulated in each of these formalisms, and indicate how this suggests a structural realist interpretation of spacetime.

متن کاملRussell’s Absolutism vs.(?) Structuralism
Along with Frege, Russell maintained an absolutist stance regarding the subject matter of mathematics, revealed rather than imposed, or proposed, by logical analysis. The Fregean definition of cardinal number, for example, is viewed as (essentially) correct, not merely adequate for mathematics. And Dedekind’s “structuralist” views come in for criticism in the Principles. But, on reflection, Rus...
متن کاملIn search of (spacetime) structuralism
Structuralism is supposed to be a dissolver of metaphysical pseudodebates. This paper is a search for the thesis behind the rhetoric. Taking ‘spacetime structuralism’ as a case study, I identify six different theses that seem to share this name. My conclusions are largely negative: that those theses that are new are not plausible, and vice versa. The exception is structuralism as a rejection of...
